Metro Boomin speaks on state of hip-hop after 'Like That'

St Louis producer Metro Boomin has been in the hip-hop headlines recently following the release of his joint album with Future, We Don’t Trust You, which has spawned several hits.

From ‘Type Shit’ featuring Travis Scott and Playboi Carti peaking at number two to ‘Cinderella’ at number six, the collaborative album spawned five top ten tracks and the body of work has remained at number one on the Billboard 200.

The album has generated a lot of controversy, mostly surrounding the song ‘Like That’ featuring Kendrick Lamar, which has ignited a feud with Drake. As such, it is no surprise that the beatmaker (real name Leland Wayne) has commented on the current state of hip-hop.

Taking to Instagram to comment on hip-hop’s current state, Wayne wrote, “HIP HOP IS ALIVE AND WELL”, “#WEDONTTRUSTYOU.” The controversial track ‘Like That’ managed to land at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 making it Kendrick Lamar’s second number one as a featured artist alongside Taylor Swift‘s 2015 hit ‘Bad Blood’.

‘Like That’ set the culture on fire as it heard the Compton native fire shots at both J Cole and Drake. Two lyrical giants of hip-hop who are considered the only competitors to Lamar. However, referencing the pair’s recent collaboration, ‘First Person Shooter’ Lamar dissed the duo.

Speaking about the track, the TDE emcee rapped, “Yeah, get up with me/ Fuck sneak dissin’, first-person shooter/ I hope they came with three switches.” He also spoke about the notion they are all part of the “Big Three”, rhyming, “Think I won’t drop the location? I still got PTSD / Motherfuck the big three, nigga, it’s just big me!”

Drake recently responded to the diss during a show in Sunrise, Florida telling the crowd, “A lot of people ask me how I’m feeling … I’ma let you know I’m feeling. Listen, the same way I’m feeling is the same way I want you to walk out this building tonight. I got my fucking head up high, my back straight, I’m 10 fucking toes down in Florida and anywhere else I go.”
