Nipsey Hussle’s killer has conviction upheld by California court

In 2019, Nipsey Hussle’s murder devastated the hip-hop community. At only 33 years old, Hussle was shot dead as his career was going from strength to strength. Now, a court has rejected his murderer’s appeal for freedom outright.

On March 31st, 2019, Hussle was shot at least 10 times in the parking lot of his store, Marathon Clothing, in Los Angeles. Eric Ronald Holder Jr was identified as a suspect. He was convicted of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter for harming bystanders, and two counts of assault with a firearm for shooting two men.

In February, 2023, the trial came to an end when Holder was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He was given 25 years to life for the murder, 25 years for the firearm sentencing and 10 years for assault with a firearm

However, Holder has been trying to appeal his sentence ever since. In his appeals, he claims to have been impacted by his mental health.

Now, the judge in his original case took this into consideration. Judge H. Clay Jacke II said during the sentencing, “I am very mindful of what was presented as to Mr. Holder’s mental health.” However, Jacke asserted that Holder’s mental state does not and cannot undo the fatal damage done as he added, “[I’m] also mindful of the devastation caused to the victims and their families. I believe this sentence balances the two.”

Holder’s recent appeal has now been dismissed and rejected outright by the court. In response, the courts in California issued a long statement about the original trial and detailed the ways in which Holder’s original case was executed fairly.

The statement read, “The trial court fully understood and properly exercised its discretion when it declined to dismiss the firearm enhancement.” The message stated that the court did not “abuse its discretion” when it came to prohibiting Holder’s defence. It also added, “Nothing in the trial court’s rulings prevented appellant from arguing objective and subjective provocation to the jury.”

The decision to uphold Holder’s sentence has been met with praise and celebration by Hussle’s fans who still mourn the rapper and entrepreneur’s shocking death. Herman “Cowboy” Douglas, a close friend of Hussle, spoke on the decision. “One man’s mistake, one man’s action,” he told KTLA 5. “[It] messed up a whole community.”

Hussle’s brother, Samiel Asghedom, was appointed the permanent administrator of his estate, dealing with his brother’s legacy.
