Meek Mill has issued an apology after a clip from his new music video caused an uproar online. In said clip, Mill is shown rapping explicit lyrics while walking around Ghana’s Jubille House in Accra, the country’s presidential residence.
Meek visited Jubilee House after receiving an invitation following a performance at the Afronationa concert in Accra. Released on Sunday, January 8th, the footage has sparked outrage from viewers who maintain the rapper should never have been allowed to film on-site. This new music follows Meek’s decision to drop ten tapes independently in the summer of 2022.
Responding to the clip, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for the North Tongu district, wrote: “All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately. How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively? Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high-security installation?”
The rapper subsequently removed the clip and is putting together a new version of the music video. Meek also issued an apology via Twitter, in which he wrote: “To the people of Ghana, no video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana.”
The message continues: “The fastest way to make connection is thru music and I wanted to do that with displaying art … im in my 30’s from America and didn’t know much about the lifestyle here.”
Meek then issued another tweet reading: “My apologies to the people if any disrespect! We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa … what I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see coming soon! My apologies to the office also!”
