Mac Miller's five favourite films of all time

We’re not here to suggest that movies are important as music, largely because we don’t agree with it. However, to ignore the indelible impact films can have on pop culture and, by definition, hip hop as well, it feels prevalent to make a note of some of the most influential films. Namely, the films that have inspired some of hip hop’s best artists. Now, we take a look back at Mac Miller‘s favourite films of all time.

The late Mac Miller was a creative tour de force who first shot to fame as a teenage prodigy. The rapper lived up to the initial hype before blossoming into one of the most talented lyricists of his generation. This footage of him freestyling as a teen shows that Mac was no ordinary talent. He first started releasing music as Easy Mac while he was a teenager, and his debut mixtape But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy arrived in 2007 under this moniker when he was just fifteen. Staggeringly, at this point, Miller had only been rapping for 12 months, and only two years later, his first two mixtapes arrived as Mac Miller.

They led to him receiving widespread recognition, with his name finally starting to get clout. Throughout his devastating short career, Miller released four full-length studio albums during his life and the posthumous Circles, which his mourning fans greeted with mixed emotions last year. Remembering miller and his work extends to also looking back to the art that made the rapper we knew and loved.

Miller was never afraid to share his influences when talking with interviewers. Far removed from the bravado of traditional hip hop, Miller was an open book and unafraid to expose himself. Having previously been asked about his favourite films of all time, Miller cheekily noted that Lion King was one of the star attractions.

Later, he was asked a similar question and responded with another open and honest answer: “It’s so hard to describe because it’s not always the fact that it’s a good movie—and this is an amazing movie—but How High,” Miller notes as his favourite film.

“At the end of the day, How High shaped me as a human being when I was a kid. When I was young, we used to watch How High every day,” the rapper confirmed. “Before I started working my ass off every day, we literally watched, from the ages of like 12 to fuckin’ 17, smokin’ weed every single day with the VHS of How High that we would just play and rewind, play and rewind. But there’s a million: KIDS was a big one for me, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Almost Famous.”

There you have it, it may not be the coolest list of films you’ve ever seen, but, just like Mac Miller, it’s real.
