Lizzo blasts Donald Trump and his tariffs in new ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit
‘Good as Hell’ singer Lizzo recently made an appearance on Saturday Night Live to perform a medley of some of her most well-known songs as well as some of her new music, and during her performance, she indirectly addressed some of Donald Trump’s most recent policies.
The performance is her first on television since being named in various lawsuits in 2023 and since Donald Trump’s inauguration. Despite previously holding her tongue, she decided to address the president’s policies directly.
Although Lizzo did not give a rambling speech about Trump, she used fashion and her music to indirectly address the state of the US and some of the moves made by Donald Trump, in particular, his “reciprocal tariffs.”
Economists and foreign policy experts alike have poked holes in the tariffs and highlighted how absurd they are. Still, Lizzo wanted to take it to the masses, and so took to the Saturday Night Live stage wearing a crop top with the word “TARIFFIED” emblazoned across it.
After Jon Hamm introduced the vocalist onto the stage, Lizzo went all-out with her performance and didn’t look shaken, even though she undoubtedly knew the effect her “TARIFFIED” crop top would have. To make sure fans weren’t uncertain about the message, the ‘Love In Real Life’ singer had an American flag projected behind her for context.
Irrespective of Lizzo’s actions, Saturday Night Live has always been political. Shortly after her performance, Jon Hamm performed a sketch entitled “The White POTUS,” in which he mimicked Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK) in a spoof of the critically acclaimed show The White Lotus.
In a behind-the-scenes video, Lizzo was seen wearing a similar crop top with the slightly longer message “AMERICA IS TARIFFIED,” reinforcing her anti-Trump message and political stance.
