Lil Wayne reveals his perfect hip-hop fantasy football team
Dwayne Michael Carter Jr – Lil Wayne, to you and I – has certainly reached the upper echelon of hip hop stardom. As such, the rapper has been offered opportunities and experiences that most people can only dream of. For Wayne, many of these opportunities have revolved around his utter adoration for the world of American football.
A well-documented fan of the Green Bay Packers, despite being born over 1000 miles away in New Orleans, Lil Wayne has become increasingly relevant to the NFL world in recent years. The ‘A Milli’ rapper is regularly interviewed by sports pundits on ESPN, and he even led his beloved Packers out onto the field during a match against the Detroit Lions last year.
This love for the sport has certainly not gone unnoticed. In fact, a sports-based podcast recently asked Wayne to compile a fantasy football line-up, made entirely of his contemporaries within the hip-hop world. While Wayne’s picks might not make the team worthy of the Super Bowl, the team does offer some insight into the rapper’s views on other figures within the industry.
Talking to the podcast Not Just Football, Wayne shared, “Obviously, I got to be the coach,” before delving into the fantasy team’s starting line-up, “As far as quarterback, my dawg, the 6ix God as the quarterback, Champagne Papi [Drake].” Wayne then goes on to equate Jay-Z with one of the greatest quarterbacks in recent times, Tom Brady. “[Jay-Z] would be Tom Brady,” he said, “so Jay’s not in this. He’s just retired.”
Continuing in his fantasy line-up, Wayne mused, with genuine excitement, “I want our running back to be, you know, like, tough, hardened. I like tough running backs – I played fullback – so Beanie Sigel. Wide receiver, you know they got to be flamboyant,” the rapper continued. “They got to be swaggy; we going Future. Opposite side of him, we going with 2 Chainz. He going to be the guy, the wide receiver that be like, ‘Man, just put it up. Just throw it up.’”
Concluding this bizarre line-up, Wayne said, “Linebackers. Need them to be white-boy-crazy. Eye black just makes no more sense. We going Post Malone. You see all the tattoos and the grill, yeah. He remind me of [Maxx] Crosby. We got [The Game] and [50 Cent] on each end, left and right.”
While Lil Wayne’s fantasy football line-up might read like a who’s-who of prominent rappers of the past 20 years, the on-field chemistry might be somewhat lacking. For instance, The Game and 50 Cent famously hate each other. Quarterback Drake and wide receiver Future are also engaged in some unavoidable beef at current.
