The albums Lil Wayne has completely forgotten: “It holds no significance”
Lil Wayne has had a long career, and even at 42 years old, he still enjoys making music. Although the New Orleans emcee has fallen back from making music since Welcome 2 Collegrove, his 2023 collaborative project with 2 Chainz, he still looks set to add to the ever-growing list of albums and mixtapes he has released over the years.
However, despite the fact that he has released 13 full-length studio projects, in one interview, Weezy admitted that some of his career is a blur and that after he puts out a project, he never looks back. Furthermore, his most successful album series, Tha Carter, which came to an end in 2018, is something that the ‘6 foot 7 foot’ doesn’t even remember very well.
His 2008 project, Tha Carter III, is considered a hip-hop classic and delivered one of his most well-known tracks’ Lollipop.’ It also produced ‘A Milli,’ another classic Lil Wayne song. However, during an in-depth conversation about the sheer amount of music, when asked if he has fond memories of Tha Carter III, the Louisiana native responded, “I’m going to be so honest with you: I don’t know Tha Carter III, Tha Carter II, Tha Carter One from Tha Carter IV. And that’s just my God’s honest truth.”
He continued to admit that some song names he doesn’t even remember because his headspace is always in the present and recent past, stating, “You could lie, you could ask me [about] such and such song, I wouldn’t even know what we talking about. So, it holds no significance to me at all.”
Many would describe 2008 as the year that Lil Wayne was running hip-hop and ultimately an unparalleled force. However, Weezy himself didn’t even know 2008 was the year Tha Carter III was released, telling one interviewer, “Nah, I don’t even know if that’s when Tha Carter III came out. That’s how much I don’t know. I work every day, bro — every single day.”
The Funeral creator insisted that he has a terrible memory, adding, “And also, I always look at it as the curse part of the gift and the curse. I believe that [God] blessed me with this amazing mind but would not give [me] an amazing memory to remember this amazing shit.”
Although Lil Wayne doesn’t remember a lot about the 2000s, he reflected on the formula that he had for creating hot albums and mixtapes, unveiling, “All of [my projects] have their own approach. If it’s a Tha Carter song, I approach it with a Carter song effect. Some mixtapes I [rhyme over] all the songs that are recently out, that are hot songs. And I approach those the same way the original artist approached them. I just say different words.”
However, he insisted that if he’s working with the iconic Gangsta Grillz DJ, DJ Drama, he takes a different approach, concluding, “If it’s a mixtape with DJ Drama, then I know Drama’s going to want a lot of original songs. But the way I approach those, I say whatever the hell I want because I know that’s what Drama wants.”
Although Lil Wayne released Tha Carter III many years ago, it is still unbelievable that the lyricist has no recollection of what was arguably the peak of his career.
