Kendrick Lamar collaborator Lefty Gunplay arrested on drug possession charges
Lefty Gunplay has been charged with drug possession. The Los Angeles rapper, known for his recent appearance on Kendrick Lamar‘s GNX album, was arrested in El Paso, Texas, on February 24th on multiple charges.
According to El Paso Police Department jail records, Gunplay was hit with three charges, including failing to wear a seatbelt, possessing a prohibited item in a correctional facility and having a controlled substance in his possession.
Gunplay is accused of having four grams or more, but less than 200 grams, of an unnamed substance. The charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000 if the person is convicted.
He was released the same day he was arrested after posting a bond for just over $35,000. Gunplay was in the city to perform at Friends Sports Bar & Kitchen. He ultimately missed the show and spoke to Power 102.1 about what happened.
“Later on, I’ll get into further details on what really happened, but if you know, you know,” he said. “I feel like I gotta make it up to my El Paso fans. I know I got a lot of fans in Texas. Things didn’t work out the way they were supposed to, but at the end of the day, everything happens for a reason. I love Texas. Hopefully we can make it right.”
Gunplay featured on Kendrick’s hit single ‘TV Off’, produced by Mustard. The song peaked at number two on the Hot 100 and six on the UK Singles Chart. Late last year, Gunplay claimed a deluxe version of GNX was on the way with more collaborations between them.
“He has some stuff,” he said on the Bootleg Kev Podcast. “We did two, three songs. He has some stuff in the chamber. He told me that we’re going to work again, for sure. I know he’s got a deluxe version coming out. He’s very secretive.”
He continued, “Everybody thought that I was playing — I wasn’t, though, as much as I wanted to tell everybody,” he said. “I almost blew it. ‘Cause we signed NDAs and I couldn’t wait to tell everybody. We had to sign NDAs and they were like, ‘You’re going [in the studio] with Kendrick.’”
