Lauryn Hill owes massive six-figure sum in tax debts
Lauryn Hill reportedly owes the IRS a hefty six-figure sum in tax debts.
The Fugees artist spent time in prison for tax evasion over a decade ago, but she still owes the US federal government.
According to records obtained by TMZ, the New Jersey Division of Taxation filed two separate liens against Hill. The first unpaid debt totals $133,246, while the second amounts to $758,912.02, with both still active in the system.
However, Hill has allegedly set up a repayment plan with the Internal Revenue Service, gradually paying off what she owes following the cancellation of tour dates.
In a statement, Hill’s spokesperson said, “Ms Hill is complying with a repayment plan she entered into with the State of New Jersey to resolve state income tax liabilities incurred after cancellation of a tour, which greatly impacted the tour’s cash flow.”
In May 2018, Hill was sentenced to three months in prison for failing to pay roughly $1 million in taxes. She was ordered to pay $60,000 and spend three months in home confinement, as well as a year of parole supervision.
Upon her sentencing, Hill said, “I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them. I had an economic system imposed on me.”
Assistant US Attorney Sandra Moser described the explanation for her actions as “a parade of excuses centring around her feeling put upon.”
The news comes shortly after fellow Fugees rapper Pras, who is about to serve a 14-year prison sentence, dropped his lawsuit against Hill.
He accused her of fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, improper accounting, unjust enrichment, and refusal to permit a tour audit, among other claims.
