Lauryn Hill delivers special D’Angelo tribute at the 2026 Grammys

Lauryn Hill honoured D’Angelo at the 2026 Grammy Awards following his death last year.

The Fugees artist delivered a special medley on February 1st, kicking things off with a performance of their collaboration, ‘Nothing Even Matters’, from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

At the start of the record, she said, “D and I never got to do this on stage together. Make time for the people you love while you can. Thank you to his band, the Vanguard.”

Following ‘Nothing Even Matters’, Hill was joined by Leon Thomas for ‘Devils Pie’, with Lucky Daye joining her for ‘Brown Sugar’.

Then, Raphael Saadiq and Anthony Hamilton appeared for ‘Lady’, with Bilal singing ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel)’ and Jon Batiste hitting the stage for ‘Africa’.

As part of her rare televised appearance, Hill also paid tribute to the late Roberta Flack, performing ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ with Batiste and a full band.

She also sang ‘Compared to What’ with Leon Bridges and Alexia Jayy, ‘Closer I Get to You’ with Lalah Hathaway and October London, and ‘Where Is the Love’ with John Legend and Chaka Khan.

D’Angelo passed away on October 14th, 2025, at the age of 51, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Paying tribute after his death, Hill wrote on Instagram, “Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius.”

Flack died from cardiac arrest on February 24th, 2025, at the age of 88.
