Lauryn Hill to honour D’Angelo at 2026 Grammy Awards
Lauryn Hill will honour the late D’Angelo at the 2026 Grammy Awards over the weekend.
The Fugees musician is one of many performers taking to the stage on February 1st, where she will pay tribute to both D’Angelo and Roberta Flack.
Flack passed away on February 24th, 2025, at the age of 88, following cardiac arrest. Hill famously covered ‘Killing Me Softly with His Song’, also performed by Flack, for the Fugees’ 1996 album The Score.
D’Angelo died from pancreatic cancer on October 14th, 2025, at the age of 51. Hill collaborated with the singer on ‘Nothing Even Matters’ for her classic 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Following his death, Hill wrote a heartfelt letter to her late friend and collaborator, noting his impact on the world around him.
“People need reflection,” she wrote. “I regret not having more time with you. Your undeniable beauty and talent were not of this world, and a presence not of this world needs protection in a world that covets light and the anointing of God. You sir, moved us, stirred us, inspired and even intimidated others to action with your genius.”
She continued, “Thank you for being a beacon of light to a generation and beyond who had no remembrance of the legacy that preceded us. Thank you for charting the course and for making space during a time when no similar space really existed.”
Hill went on to credit D’Angelo for being an inspiration to Black men and prayed for peace for the singer in the afterlife.
The 68th Annual Grammy Awards will take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. Kendrick Lamar is the most-nominated artist with nine nominations.
