The first thing Krayzie Bone said after waking up from a nine-day coma

Krayzie Bone, a member of the legendary rap group Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, knew something was wrong. He’d started coughing up blood, so, naturally, he headed for the hospital. Things quickly took a turn for the worst.

This was in September 2023, although Krayzie had been living with a condition called pulmonary sarcoidosis since 2016. This is what he thought was to blame for his coughing, so, while he knew he needed to get it checked out, he didn’t think anything was too badly wrong. He’d experienced something like this before, and, on that occasion, he’d been treated with relative ease.

That’s not what happened this time. What had actually happened on this occasion in 2023 is that an artery inside one of his lungs had burst, and his life was now on the line. The doctors needed to close up the rupture, but that meant inducing the rapper into a coma. He ultimately remained in it for way longer than he’d expected.

“It was supposed to be a standard procedure where they would go in and stop the bleeding,” Krayzie told Spin a number of months after the nightmarish incident had occurred. “An artery in my lung had ruptured and that is what was causing the bleeding. When I went under, they shut the hole up. But after a day, they said the bleeding wouldn’t stop.”

The situation didn’t improve by the second day, which, according to Krayzie, caused his doctor “to panic.” Things were looking bad. “That’s when they told my wife they might want to get the family down here,” the rapper explained.

By day three, things were looking really dire. His doctors were preparing his family for the worst, while the general public had gotten wind of the situation, too. Rumours were beginning to spread online that he’d already died. Thankfully, they were wrong.

It was only on day four that doctors managed to get a handle on the situation. “On the fourth day, my wife said the doctor came into the waiting room and told her the bleeding had stopped and gave her the thumbs up,” Krayzie said. “After the fourth day of the bleeding, they had to keep me sedated to keep me still. I stayed six more days in incubation.”

Having headed to hospital with the expectation that he would be in and out within a day, Krayzie ultimately found himself in a coma for nine days. The situation had taken him and his family completely off guard, and he was lucky to be alive. But, as he revealed in an interview on the Holdin’ Court Podcast, his priorities upon waking up were on less serious matters.

“Man, it’s crazy,” he said on the show. “First thing I asked my wife, I said, ‘Did the Browns win?’” That would have been in reference to the Cleveland Browns, who had been playing the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL around that time.

“Bro, no lie,” said Krayzie. “She was like, nah, the Ravens kicked their ass. I was like, ‘They couldn’t give me no love while I was out?’ No lie, bro.”

But as disappointed as Krayzie might have been by that result, he’d survived this ordeal, which he came to be extremely grateful for. As he remarked to Spin, “Just seeing how fast everything could change is definitely eye-opening. I don’t take anything for granted. Cherish all the loved ones you have.”
