Kodak Black asks Florida court to drop bail conditions
Kodak Black wants the court to drop his bail conditions.
The 29-year-old rapper (real name Bill Kapri) was arrested in Florida in May on drug trafficking charges.
According to ClickOrlando, his lawyer, Bradford Cohen, filed a motion in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court for Orange County on July 20th.
Cohen claimed prosecutors missed a legal deadline to file formal charges, citing a Florida rule that requires them to charge a defendant within 60 days of arrest.
Kodak was arrested and taken to the Orange County Corrections Department on May 6th after being accused of trafficking MDMA.
The 60-day deadline to file formal charges ended on July 5th, with no information or indictment allegedly filed. This week’s motion asks the court to release Kodak from his bail conditions unless Florida can establish a good cause.
Police found a bag with a bottle of prescription cough syrup with the rapper’s fingerprints on it. Cohen revealed that Kodak was planning to fight the trafficking charge, claiming it had a “weak legal basis.”
Speaking at the time, his attorney said, “We look forward to yet another fruitful resolution to another case that should have never been filed.”
Kodak was arrested for a second time later in May and charged with fleeing/eluding law enforcement and resisting an officer without violence. Cohen said, “This is a self-surrender from yet another ‘investigation’ that just happened to also take five months to ‘investigate’ for allegedly fleeing and eluding.”
He continued, “It’s not unexpected, as this is usually the procedure we go through where there is an unfounded weak arrest and then followed up by yet another arrest for cases that allegedly take five or six months to investigate. At this point, I think everyone agrees that Kodak is consistently being targeted.”
