Killer Mike offers Drake helpful advice following Kendrick Lamar feud
It’s fair to say that following his battle with Kendrick Lamar, Drake has had an embarrassing six months. That said, the Grammy-award-winning rapper Killer Mike has offered up some advice to the ‘God’s Plan’ emcee.
Earlier this year, the Atlanta lyricist won three Grammy awards for his album Michael, not only for ‘Best Rap Album’ but also for ‘Best Rap Song’ and ‘Best Rap Performance’ for his single ‘Scientists & Engineers’.
As such, he is an accomplished hip-hop elder and during a recent interview with GQ magazine, he spoke directly to Drizzy and gave some suggestions as to how he should proceed following his loss to Kendrick Lamar.
The Run The Jewels lyricist kindly but candidly suggested that the Scorpion creator should accept the result and continue in the direction he was heading, as he stated, “I mean, you do what hip-hop has always done. You take your Ls like you take your Ws, you dust yourself off, and you get back to making dope music. That’s all.”
Killer Mike asserted that hip-hop has always had lyrical feuds and told Drake that he shouldn’t take the battle too personally, adding, “Rap is pugilism and poetry. You’re going to go through battles. I wouldn’t overpersonalize it. I’d just get back to satisfying whatever Drake fans are wanting.”
The ‘36” Chain’ rhymer even highlighted how other legendary MCs lost battles in their day and recovered, emphasising, “The best has taken some losses. Ice Cube handed my favourite group in the world [N.W.A] a loss, but that didn’t stop Eazy-E from discovering Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and making the biggest comeback ever. That didn’t stop Dr. Dre from making The Chronic, you know what I’m saying?”
Although Drake has been cast as a loser by the majority of hip-hop, Killer Mike was around in the day of ‘Ether’ and insisted that he was sure Drake would carry on making music, adding, “It just happens, and I don’t think he’s going to stop making music and go throw himself off a bridge. He’ll be okay—just chill. Go hang out with a few girls for a year. Come back, come back swinging.”
The Run The Jewels frontman isn’t the only person who has attempted to give advice to Drake. Earlier this year, 50 Cent admitted that he had spoken to the Canadian about his battle. During an interview with Billboard, he recalled what he told the star, recounting, “I was telling him, it’s not him. I’m listening on the outskirts. It’s not you. Don’t let yourself think that for a second.”
Fifty concluded, “On some real shit, I said, ‘They said you lost, okay. Well, what did you lose?’ What exactly did he lose if he got $300-something million on his last tour? You didn’t lose a motherfucking thing, man.”
