Kendrick Lamar to be joined by SZA at Super Bowl Halftime Show
SZA will join Kendrick Lamar as a special guest during his performance at Super Bowl LIX in February. Apple Music announced the news on Instagram on January 23rd, writing, “Catch Kendrick Lamar with guest SZA”.
The post also included a clip of Kendrick rehearsing on the field at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. “What’s up with it? Yeah, everything’s smooth. I’m on the field right now,” he says in the clip while on a phone call. “Yep, you know, same old, keeping the body in motion. Getting that wind up. You know, this field a lot bigger than people think, so that’s a must. Exactly.”
He continues, “Now, I’ve been thinking about a guest performer…” SZA then intervenes and throws a bucket of water over Kendrick’s head from behind, confirming her appearance on February 9th.
Kendrick and SZA are set to tour together between April and June, so the pairing makes perfect sense. The ‘Grand National Tour’ will take place in stadiums across North America. It will see them visit cities such as Atlanta, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, and Washington, DC.
The ‘Kill Bill’ singer recently admitted that she’d like to record a collaborative album with Kendrick. “I think that would be amazing. He’s such a genius, and part of his genius is him being so elusive and so mysterious,” she said on Sherri. “I don’t know what’s going on as much as you don’t know what’s going on. When ‘Luther’ came out, I said, ‘OK, that’s the vocals we’re using.’ And same with ‘Gloria.’”
She added, “I love that. He’s a huge part of my ‘fumbling and finding’ era, because I’m just trusting all of his expertise and being thrust into these moments. He’s so good at saying ‘yes’ and staying grounded, so I’m just like, ‘Teach me, Sensei, what you know.’”
Kendrick and SZA have collaborated many times over the years, most recently on ’30 for 30′ from SOS Deluxe: LANA. They also worked together on ‘Gloria’ and ‘Luther’ last year on Kendrick’s GNX album. Previously, they teamed up on ‘All the Stars’, ‘Doves in the Wind’, ‘Babylon’ and Jay Rock’s ‘Easy Bake’.
