Kendrick Lamar reunites with his Compton high school teacher

Kendrick Lamar reunited with one of his high school teachers last week.

The rapper made a rare appearance for an event at his alma mater, Centennial High School, in Compton, California, on May 7th.

During his visit, his seventh-grade science teacher turned up to meet him, with the pair sharing an embrace while surrounded by a crowd of people. Kendrick told her, “It’s so good to see you,” and “I’ll never forget you.”

Fellow Compton artists Dr Dre and will.i.am also attended the event to unveil the school’s new campus after having building work done for the first time in 70 years.

Dre was invited onto the stage by Micah Ali, board president of Compton Unified School District, to deliver a speech.

“Sometimes you hear that term ‘full circle,’” he began. “This is really a full circle moment for me, because I did actually attend this high school. Well, sometimes I attended. I was enrolled, I was here, sometimes.”

He continued, “On this day, I’m making a commitment, and that commitment is to let go of the notion of giving back. Instead, I’m embracing the power of investing forward. You may not know this about me, but I only invest in things that will have a powerful impact. Today isn’t just a new building; it’s about a promise kept to the city that made me. Point blank, period.”

Dre went on to discuss his intention to help bring through the next generation of talented people from the city of Compton.

“This groundbreaking is where the vision we’ve shared for years finally hits the pavement,” he said. “We aren’t just moving dirt today. We’re investing in the next generation that’s coming straight out of Compton. We’re tearing down walls and opening doors for our next scholars, innovators, creators, pioneers, technicians, and engineers that absolutely have the potential to change this world.”
