Kanye West plays Diddy and R Kelly during DJ set
Kanye West reportedly played tracks by disgraced hip-hop figures Diddy and R Kelly back to back during a recent DJ set. Producer Mike Hector attended the set and posted updates about the gig on his social media.
The songs come following a line of controversy attached to West. His most recent album, Vultures II, has been met with widespread disappointment across his fanbase. One of his most unfinished offerings yet is a haphazard blend of ideas that fail to take any kind of form whatsoever.
In a now-deleted post, Mike Hector wrote on his social media, “I’m at this party and Kanye djing. He played 2 diddy songs and then a r Kelly song right after. This ni**a do not give a fuck.” Among his controversial offerings, Ye also played songs by Prince, The Eagles, Jay-Z, Eurythmics and more during the eclectic set.
This isn’t the first time that West has made reference to R Kelly and Diddy. In his album Vultures I, he pays homage to them on a number of occasions. They appear in the same line on ‘Carnival’ when West raps, “Anybody pissed off, gotta make em drink the urine / Now I’m Ye-Kelly, bitch, now, I’m Bill Cosby, bitch / Now, I’m Puff Daddy rich, that’s #MeToo me rich.”
West has a history of supporting disgraced musicians countless times in recent years. He has given speeches in the past about the fact that people need to try and separate the art from the artist. Given how much he has come under fire in recent years following his incendiary comments, it would make sense for Ye to promote such a mindset.
“Everybody, they want the art from the artist, but anytime they do anything erratic, they just gonna pull up full documentaries on em. And they gonna come with the Michael [Jackson] documentary,” said West during a Sunday Service performance, “We can enjoy all their music all we want. I thought I wasn’t going to go there today but uh… If we gon tear down artists, let’s go ahead and take [Leonardo] da Vinci out the Louvre while we at it. Let’s take down all the art.”
West has spoken at length about Diddy in the past. During his interview on Drink Champs in 2022, he once said that Diddy was a “fed.” However, this was before a series of sexual misconduct allegations were made against the rapper.
