Kanye West names the “best game ever made”
Kanye West hasn’t spoken much about his favourite video games over the years, but he recently took to social media to reveal what he believes is the “best game ever made.” Ye claimed that the action-adventure game, The Last of Us Part II, is unbeatable when it comes to video games.
The Chicago rapper posted a short video to his Instagram Stories on January 1st alongside a bold claim. “Last of Us 2 on survivor+ mode got me spending all day on one board,” he wrote. “By faaaaaaarrrr the best game ever made so far.” Due to the randomness of the post, Kanye then stated that the co-sign wasn’t sponsored.
The Last of Us Part II was released in June 2020 on the PlayStation 4, serving as the sequel to 2013’s The Last of Us. The story is set four years after the original game, which was turned into a HBO series in 2023.
The survivor mode, ‘No Return’, was first available with the remastered release for the PlayStation 5 on January 19th, 2024. It serves as a single-player mode where players decide their path while experiencing random encounters.
Kanye once wanted to create a video game with Nintendo titled Only One, but the game has yet to be released. West approached video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto at E3 in 2015; the aim of the game was to control his late mother, Donda, flying to heaven.
IGN journalist Zachary Ryan wrote on X (formerly Twitter) in 2022, “He said that Kanye had shown up at the Nintendo booth unannounced and asked for an audience with Miyamoto specifically, right then and there. He went on to say that Kanye showed him the prototype for a video game.”
He continued: “In it, you played as Kanye’s late mother flying to heaven, set to a soundtrack conducted by Kanye himself. He was shaking his head as he described it, not like he thought it was a bad game but more so in the way that he just sorta couldn’t believe that Kanye West was pitching him a video game.”
Ryan added, “He described, incredulously and in great detail, what the game looked like and how it played. I was laughing because I sorta of couldn’t believe it either. At the end of the story, he nodded and said ‘it was very interesting.’ There was a long pause and he added, ‘It was very moving.’”
Ye announced the game two weeks after at a Yeezy fashion event in New York before the trailer was revealed at E3 in 2016.
