Why Joyner Lucas called Logic a ‘corny guy’

Joyner Lucas was once excited to collaborate with Logic but a number of reasons led to him throwing shade at the Maryland rapper.

The pair teamed up in 2016 on ‘Sriracha’, a Tech N9ne song that appeared on his The Storm album. They laid down back-to-back verses. However, Lucas felt Logic disrespected him by the lengthy amount of time it took to submit his verse. He was also disappointed with the quality of Logic’s verse, having previously held him to high standards.

“I just think he’s a corny guy,” he told Billboard. “Honestly, it stemmed from him going on the ‘Sriracha’ record and it took a long time to get it back. When Tech N9ne initially gave me the record, I was excited about Logic being on there, but after that much time went by and the verse he gave was so disrespectful, I felt like he gave Tech that verse on a count of me being on the record.”

He continued, “I felt he was upset I was on the record and gave a wack verse. I think if that was just a Tech N9ne and Logic record, he would’ve never did that. That definitely rubbed me the wrong way. I took that a little bit personal because that was real disrespectful. I know how he raps.”

But it wasn’t just the issues with ‘Sriracha’ that led to Joyner Lucas’ “corny” evaluation. He also believed Logic copied his idea to use a phone number in a title; Lucas announced that his mixtape would be called 508-507-2209 around the same time Logic released ‘1-800-273-8255’, his hit single that included the phone number for the American National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

“Then the phone number idea,” he said. “I noticed when I had dropped my album title [508-507-2280], he dropped a phone number record, but I’m not going to bash him for a suicide record, but like, come on bro. There’s too much stuff that make me feel a type of way. I feel by now the cat should’ve reached out, but it is what it is. It’s not like I’m mad at him like that, I just think he’s corny.”

Logic and Joyner Lucas went back-and-forth with disses over the years via music and social media, but the pair eventually buried the hatchet. They’ve ended up collaborating on a couple of Lucas’ albums since, including ‘Isis’ from ADHD in 2020 and ‘Still Alright’ on Not Now I’m Busy earlier this year, which also featured Twista.

Lucas later confessed that the reason for beefing with Logic was due to being jealous of his talents and successful career.

“I told him, straight up, I felt like at that time I was jealous,” he said on The Breakfast Club. “’You was doing everything I wanted to do. You’re dope. You’re lyrical. You was ripping down tours and you had all these relationships with artists that I loved and respected. I really idolised you and I didn’t even realise how much I did.’”
