Jam Master Jay’s alleged killer seeks $1 million bond

A man accused of murdering Jam Master Jay had his conviction overturned last year. Now, he’s attempting to be released from prison.

The Run-DMC member died on October 30th, 2002, at the age of 37, after being shot and killed at his recording studio in Queens, New York.

US District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall acquitted Jay’s godson, Karl Jordan Jr, in December, one of two men convicted of killing the hip-hop legend.

According to the Associated Press, Jordan is seeking freedom on a $1 million bond while facing unrelated charges.

In a court filing from his lawyers on January 30th, they wrote, “There are seismic changes in circumstances warranting Mr Jordan’s release.” Prosecutors declined to comment on the bond request, with no date currently set for a hearing.

Jordan, along with Jay’s longtime friend, Ronald Washington, were arrested in 2020 and convicted in 2024.

In a statement after the judge overturned his conviction, Jordan’s lawyer, John Diaz, said, “We are really happy for Mr Jordan and his family that justice was served. Despite the verdict, he remains in prison on drug charges.”

Last month, federal prosecutors challenged the verdict in the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Despite the decision over Jordan, the judge denied Ronald Washington’s request for acquittal or a new trial due to alleged stronger evidence.

Reacting to the news in December, fellow Run-DMC member DMC said, “I just heard about it this morning. I’ve got to find out from the family what’s going on. I don’t listen to anybody except the family.”

He added, “So, anybody out there, don’t go reporting news, don’t go by news, don’t go by rumours, stay off social media, actually speak to the people that are actually going through what it is that they’re going through, because then you get the truth.”
