DMC reacts to Jam Master Jay’s overturned murder conviction

Two men were convicted of the murder of Jam Master Jay, but one of those was overturned last week. Following the news, fellow Run-DMC member DMC has shared his reaction.

Jay (real name Jason Mizell) was shot and killed on October 30th, 2002, when he was 37 years old.

Karl Jordan Jr and Ronald Washington were arrested in 2020 and convicted in 2024. However, Jordan Jr was acquitted by US District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall on December 19th.

TMZ caught up with DMC on the streets of New York City on December 22nd, asking him about the overturned conviction.

“I didn’t hear, I just heard about it this morning,” he said during a short interview. “I’ve got to find out from the family what’s going on. I don’t listen to anybody except the family.”

He continued, “So, anybody out there, don’t go reporting news, don’t go by news, don’t go by rumours, stay off social media, actually speak to the people that are actually going through what it is that they’re going through, because then you get the truth.”

When asked if the news was surprising, he replied, “No, not really. But, see this belt buckle? I wear it every day, so every time that you see me, I am chilling with Jay.”

Speaking on how he wants Jay to be remembered, he said, “As the greatest DJ ever, and Grandmaster Flash wouldn’t be upset.”

Jay, a member of Run-DMC alongside Joseph ‘Run’ Simmons and Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels, was murdered at his recording studio in Queens.

In addition to overturning the conviction, the judge also denied Ronald Washington’s request for acquittal or a new trial.
