J Cole raps his life story in reverse on new single ‘Disc 2 Track 2’
J Cole has returned with a new single, ‘Track 2 Disc 2’, before his seventh album arrives next month.
This week, the North Carolina rapper announced that his upcoming album, The Fall-Off, would be released on February 6th.
Following the announcement, Cole shared a music video for the song, ‘Disc 2 Track 2’, seemingly confirming that his new project is a double album.
In the lyrics, Cole raps his life story in reverse, referencing his death, the birth of his son, getting married, and his father leaving him when he was a child.
He raps, “I persevered through the worst/ My thirst to adhere is a curse/ My life, I see it in reverse/ I first appeared in a hearse/ The driver steered it to church/ My grandkids carry the coffin to the altar as they burst in the tears from their shirts.”
Before the video starts, Cole shares a message about The Fall-Off, revealing he’s been working on the album for a decade and set high goals for himself.
“For the past 10 years, this album has been hand crafted with one intention: a personal challenge to myself to create my best work,” he wrote. “To do on my last what I was unable to do on my first. I had no way of knowing how much time, focus and energy it would eventually take to achieve this.”
He continued, “But despite the countless challenges along the way, I knew in my heart I would one day get to the finish line. I owed it first and foremost to myself. And secondly, I owed it to hip-hop.”
The video is directed by Ryan Doubiago and finds Cole moving backwards through life to coincide with the lyrics.
