J Cole gives update on new album while celebrating 40th birthday
J Cole celebrated his 40th birthday on January 28th and took to his blog to thank fans for sharing their well wishes. While doing so, he gave followers a status update on his upcoming album, which will disappoint fans.
The Fayetteville rapper started his message by stating that a new album wasn’t coming soon after his manager, Ibrahim ‘Ib’ Hamad, had informed him that people thought he was dropping a project. “Ib told me some people was thinking this blog meant an album was about to drop,” Cole wrote. “Nahhh. Not exactly. When it’s time for something you will know. This is not that.”
Cole continued, “I just wanted a place to share documentaries I be watching on YouTube and songs I fuck with. Thank you to everybody for the love today in the form of the comments, the chat and all the texts I got that I’m trying to reply to while also spending time with family and friends. I do appreciate it.”
He then shared a link to the music video for Jamaican artist Mr. Vegas’ 2011 song ‘I Am Blessed’, which has over 10 million views on YouTube. “This was the anthem for the day,” he said. “For realllllllll.”
Cole released his last project, Might Delete Later, in April last year. The mixtape debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 115,000 units and has been nominated for Best Rap Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.
However, it’s been four years since Cole dropped a studio album. The Off-Season reached number one on the Billboard 200 with 282,000 units, serving as the follow-up to 2018’s KOD.
Cole’s next album is expected to be titled The Fall Off and could be his last LP. Battle rapper Daylyt had high praise for the album on Instagram Live, saying, “Cole is going out with a nuclear missile, I’m telling y’all that.
“It’s his last go-around and he literally was like, ‘I don’t give a fuck about radio; I just wanna show the world my pen before I die.’ I heard it, all of it. It is the most amazingest rapping I have seen and heard thus far.”
