Ice Spice lands role in new ‘SpongeBob’ movie after admitting crush on animated character
Ice Spice has been cast in the upcoming SpongeBob movie. On June 10th, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation announced that the Bronx rapper would voice a character in The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.
Spice was confirmed as a new voice alongside Regina Hall, Sherry Cola, Arturo Castro and George Lopez. She joins returning cast members Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) and Mark Hamill (Flying Dutchman), with Derek Drymon on board as director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants will be released in December. The film follows SpongeBob and his friends’ journey to the depths of the ocean to face the ghost of the Flying Dutchman.
Spice once admitted she had a crush on SpongeBob growing up. “The only animated character I ever had a crush on was like, SpongeBob,” she said in a clip. “He’s very integrated in my life.”
Not only that, but she’s even released a song named after SpongeBob SquarePants. In 2022, Spice dropped a track called ‘Bikini Bottom‘, the same name as the undersea city-state where SpongeBob and his friends live in the show. The beat, produced by RiotUSA, has also been likened to background music in the series.
‘Bikini Bottom’ appeared on her Like...? EP and has over 87 million streams on Spotify. The music video has racked up a further 26 million views on YouTube.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) years ago, Spice stated, “SpongeBob my fav show idc idc.” Then, responding to a fan, she revealed that “Rock Bottom,” episode 17 from the first season, was her favourite.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants will be her second film of 2025 after Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest with A$AP Rocky, Denzel Washington and Jeffrey Wright.
