Ice Cube gives update on new ‘Friday’ movie: “Laugh-out-loud funny”
Ice Cube has provided an update on his upcoming Last Friday movie.
The NWA rapper released his classic buddy comedy film, Friday, in 1995, and it’s finally getting a sequel.
During a recent appearance on Big Boy’s Neighborhood, Cube revealed that the movie is currently in the writing stages. “We writing the script right now,” he said.
He continued, “I mean, being fans of movies like Hollywood Shuffle and Coming to America, we was like, ‘Yo, we could do our version.’ Me and DJ Pooh, that’s all we doing if we together, is laughing about everything under the sun. You know that Friday was our first script together? It was my third script.”
Cube went on to speak about the humour in Last Friday. “To me, you know, when people say, ‘We adlibed the whole thing.’ I’m like, ‘Hold up, the script is laugh-out-loud funny,” he said. “Before we even shoot it. It’s no shooting the script until everybody that read it is laughing.”
The 56-year-old confirmed the new Friday movie in October 2024 and gave a taster of what fans could expect.
“It’s coming back! We gonna do it!” he said. “We gonna make it dope, make it funny, bring it up to date, introduce new characters, bring back old characters, create the feeling the movie gives you. People love Friday because everyone experienced it. People love Friday because everyone’s lived Friday. Everyone has lived a thousand Fridays.”
Cube later claimed that Hollywood stopped his plans for the film, but it’s now back on track.
Directed by F Gary Gray, the original Friday movie starred Cube and Chris Tucker in the leading roles alongside the likes of Nia Long, Tiny ‘Zeus’ Lister Jr, Regina King, and more.
