Ice Cube confirms new ‘Friday’ movie is coming next year
Every hip-hop fan loves the movie Friday. Not only because it was written by the legendary Ice Cube but also because it was one of the first films that showed how funny and amazing people who live in the hood can be. It perfectly captured Los Angeles in the 1990s and resonated with Black people across the world.
That said, Ice Cube recently made a huge announcement and confirmed that, after much negotiation with Warner Bros, another addition to the Friday franchise will be arrive in movie theatres next year.
During an appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast with Gillie Da Kid and Wallo, the Crenshaw native revealed that this Friday movie will be the biggest and best yet, stating, “It’s coming back! We gonna do it! We gonna make it dope, make it funny, bring it up to date, introduce new characters, bring back old characters, create the feeling the movie gives you.”
The ‘You Can Do It’ lyricist explained why Friday touched so many people and detailed how it humorously reflects the situations so many go through on a daily basis, declaring, “People love Friday because everyone experienced it. People love Friday because everyone’s lived Friday. Everyone has lived a thousand Fridays.”
Ice Cube’s comments build on his recent announcement that he was in talks with Warner Bros but couldn’t get the ball rolling. In June, while speaking to Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav, he detailed how a change in management at Warner shifted the dial, detailing, “We finally got some traction with Warner Bros. They have new leadership.”
He continued, “My man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins — Mike DeLuca was there, so now he’s running Warner Bros.”
Mike DeLuca knows Cube personally and has done so since the 1990s, so when he stepped into a management position at Warner Bros, he wasn’t playing hard to get with the rapper. He was urging him to begin the project. Recalling this, Cube told Flav, “He was like, ‘Yo, what the fuck is going on with Friday? Man, let’s get this back online.’”
Ad DeLuca had so much experience working with Ice Cube, he knew that whatever he presented was going to be funny. So unlike previously, when Ice Cube got two scripts rejected now they can begin. The emcee laughed at the company, cackling, “They finally came to their senses.”
