How Tina Knowles is secretly responsible for Jay-Z’s marriage

Jay-Z’s marriage to Beyoncé is one of the few marriages that has lasted the test of time. Kanye’s relationship with Kim Kardashian survived for only eight years, and other renowned rappers such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, and many others have failed to have long-term and stable marriages.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are arguably one of the most powerful couples in the music industry. Regarding hip-hop and R&B, they are undoubtedly the most successful couple of all time, with their combined net worth surpassing one billion dollars.

Both artists have always been very mysterious and ambiguous about their relationship, but many have assumed that Jay-Z and Beyoncé just fell in love with no interference. However, Tina Knowles played a pivotal role in what would end up being their marriage.

When Jay-Z and Beyoncé first met at the turn of the millennium, their chemistry was not quite what it later became. However, thanks to Tina Knowles, Beyoncé was convinced to go on a date with the rapper.

As told in J. Randy Taraborrelli’s 2015 biography Becoming Beyoncé, after getting to know Jay-Z and having several exchanges with him, the singer was not really impressed or charmed by him in any way and expressed to her mother, “He’s nice, but I don’t know… I’m not feelin’ him.”

However, her mother saw something in Jay-Z that Bey clearly didn’t, as ever since their first date, they have remained an item and are still married to this day. In fact, the Brooklyn emcee explained their first date on the couple’s 2018 album Everything Is Love on the track ‘713’.

During the track, Jay raps, “You kept me up on the phone while you were away / You came back, I let you set the date, Nobu on the plate / I brought my dude to play it cool, my first foolish mistake!” Even after their first date, Beyoncé wasn’t in love. However, Jay-Z has since revealed that, at first, Beyoncé wasn’t impressed, but his perseverance is what made them an item.

Since their 2008 marriage, Tina Knowles has become very protective of Jay and once recalled to People magazine how, in 2022, a caucasian woman asked her how she could let Jay-Z marry her daughter, describing him as a “gangster rapper.”

However, she replied and fiercely defended the ‘Marcy Me’ rhymer, telling the lady, “And I said, ‘Yes, you assume, but you really should go and do some research on it because, no, he’s a CEO of a record label… He’s a very good person. He gives, he helps people.'” Still, that’s not surprising, considering she was the one who told Beyoncé to take a chance on Jay-Z.
