How Offset got a massive hit against his wishes: “This bullshit”

Offset, a former member of the Migos, is one of Atlanta’s mainstay MCs. As part of the trio, he rose to worldwide fame in the early 2010s, and with the help of Coach K of Quality Control, he has had a prolific career that has led to many accolades and praise. Whether he’s collaborating with Lil Baby or Lil Uzi Vert, Offset has produced many hits. However, one of his most successful collaborations only materialised because he made a compromise.

Some MCs are very selective about beats and like a particular style. Many artists have a go-to beatmaker that they use, while others look to work exclusively with hitmakers. However, while collaborating with 21 Savage, Offset was asked to rap on an instrumental that he completely hated.

St Louis producer Metro Boomin is a certified hitmaker in hip-hop. In 2017, he gave Offset and 21 Savage a beat for their collaborative album Without Warning. However, the former Migos wasn’t impressed by the beat in any way. He found it too simplistic, too sparse and a bit calm for a club anthem.

That said, it turned out to be a hit. The track, ‘Ric Flair Drip,’ became the lead single of the collaborative album and became a six times platinum song. It landed at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. All of this was strange to Offset as he didn’t even want to record the track in the first place and only did it out of love for Metro Boomin.

Furthermore, during an interview, Offset revealed he didn’t even want the song to be released. During an appearance on The Debut Live show with Carl Lamarre, while speaking about ‘Ric Flair Drip’, Offset explained, “You remember [Ric Flair Drip]? I hated the song! I hated the song so much. It was a West Coast beat, when I did I didn’t take it serious. To me, that [was] some basic shit!”

Offset even admitted he was mad with Metro Boomin for releasing the song, disclosing, “I cursed his ass out because I had been like, ‘Bro, don’t put this song on the album.’ He put it on, I wake up to it, and then I’ll never forget three days later, we were number one on Apple [Music] and all the platforms we were number one. He was like, ‘I told you! I do this shit!'”

‘Ric Flair Drip’ was loved by fans for its catchy bop and was certified platinum before Quality Control officially rolled out as a single. Furthermore, its success impacted the person the song was named after, Ric Flair.

The former WWE Wrestler appeared in the video and, during an appearance on the JAXXON podacst, the sports star admitted he made $39,000 from it. Speaking about working with Offset, the wrestler unveiled, “He’s smart, he’s articulate, and he got it all going on. I think he surrounds himself with wonderful people that are genuinely interested in his career and who he is. The guy’s got so much damn talent, it would be hard to hold him back even if they tried. He’s a phenomenal guy.”

‘Ric Flair Drip’ is still an extremely popular track. Still, while speaking with Carl Lamarre, he insisted that although he and 21 Savage get on well, they don’t plan on trying to recapture the magic of Without Warning anytime soon.
