How did Tyler, The Creator get his name?

Tyler, The Creator is one of the most prominent artists making music today. The 34-year-old rapper (born Tyler Okonma) has continued to push boundaries since he came onto the scene in the late 2000s alongside his Odd Future collective, which included Frank Ocean and Earl Sweatshirt. Aside from the genre-pushing music, part of Tyler’s allure has been his stage name.

The Los Angeles trailblazer founded OF alongside Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies in 2007, with the group releasing their debut project, The Odd Future Tape, in 2008. Tyler dropped his debut album Bastard in 2009, before going viral in 2011 with his groundbreaking single, ‘Yonkers’. The song’s bold lyrics about Hayley Williams, B.o.B, and Bruno Mars, combined with the gory music video, put him on the map.

Since then, Tyler has become a superstar with nine studio albums, including Goblin, Wolf, Cherry Bomb, Flower Boy, IGOR, Call Me If You Get Lost, Chromakopia, and Don’t Tap the Glass, his latest, which was released on July 21st, 2025. His last three albums have reached number one on the Billboard 200, as he continues to reach new heights.

Tyler has had his name since the beginning of his career, but he once considered switching up his persona after claiming it was a “dumb” name. “My full name, Tyler Okonma, in all caps just looks really cool,” he told Fast Company. “So you might see more of that, I don’t know, I’m getting older and I think when people get older they start to realise shit, you just start changing.”

Despite that, he claimed he wouldn’t change his stage name completely. “I never said I was changing my name, are you stupid? Yes,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Will embrace my last name more, less Wolf Haley, never said I was gonna change my stage name.” He added, “I joked about it being dumb but kept it. Talked about my African last name how I want to embrace it now that I’m older and have a new view on it.”

Although Tyler has never officially changed his stage name, he’s gone by various alter egos, including Tyler Haley, Poly/Mono, Ace, the Creator, ThrashPolo, and Wolf Haley, using the latter as his director name.

So, how did Tyler, The Creator get his name?

Tyler, The Creator’s stage name comes from his use of the social media platform, MySpace, during the noughties. The rapper had multiple accounts on the network, some serious and some not-so-serious, including one that showcased his creative side, like music and sketches.

“Alright. So, I had three MySpaces, right,” he explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “One of them was ‘Tyler Something’ and then another one was ‘Tyler Something.’ And then I had a MySpace that just had all my drawings and a couple beats I made and like, random ideas and stuff, and I put it under ‘Tyler, The Creator’ because I couldn’t think of anything else. That page got more popular, and I then just ran with it. I did not plan this out at all.”

Here we are, nine albums later, with a matter-of-fact name that instantly came to his head. It shows that some of the best ideas don’t require much thought. Talent and hard work are much more critical to a thriving career.
