How did Swizz Beatz meet Alicia Keys?
Swizz Beatz first entered the public consciousness as the hype man for DMX, before he went on to establish himself as a solo artist, record exec and producer. He’s been nominated for several Grammys, winning one of them, and otherwise has enjoyed a successful career in the music business—but, it can’t be denied that his fame is also based on his wife’s own stature.
Swizz Beatz has been married to Alicia Keys since 2010, but they met each other a lot earlier than that. As a matter of fact, they first encountered each other as teenagers—but they didn’t start dating until well into their adult lives.
Both Beatz and Keys grew up in New York, and they were introduced when he was 16 and she was 14. Romantically there was nothing there at this stage, at least from Keys’ perspective, and things didn’t change in the immediate years that followed.
“We ended up in the same circles at various awards shows and industry events,” Keys wrote in her memoir More Myself. “He’d usually pull up in some fancy car, rolling deep with his Bronx crew and shining with diamonds. I wanted nothing to do with that scene or with Swizz.”
That remained the case for many years, but, in 2008, they were brought together for a musical project. This is when things started to change, as Keys got to know Beatz better and realised that there was more to him than met the eye.
“The more we talked the more I noticed how his mind worked,” she reflected in her book. “Beyond the baggy jeans and arm tats there was depth. He was so aware of what was happening around the world.”
They reportedly started going out not long after that, and they tended to do so quietly and out of sight of the public’s gaze. It remained so until May 2010, when they issued a big announcement: they were getting married, and Keys was pregnant.
The couple’s wedding took place at the end of July 2010, and their first child was born a few months later in October. Four years later, in December 2014, their second child, another boy, arrived.
In 2025 the couple celebrated their 15-year wedding anniversary, with Keys posting on Instagram, “15 years of magic! And we’re just getting started.”
