Eminem announced for guest appearance at the VMAs
It has been announced that Detroit legend Eminem will be the opening act of this year’s VMAs. The rapper last performed at the award show 14 years ago, in 2010, alongside Rihanna, performing ‘Love The Way You Lie’.
On September 11th, at the UBS Arena in New York, Eminem will perform a set featuring plenty of songs from his latest project, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), as well as some of his classics from his hefty back catalogue. Notably, it will be his first televised performance of songs from his new album.
Em is known for hating award shows, and the last time he performed at one was in 2022 when an NFT company presented his and Snoop Dogg’s avatars in a Metaverse attended by the MTV audience.
Although he is known for his aversion to awards, especially the Grammys, as a result of his new project, Eminem is up for eight awards at the VMAs. Categories he’s shortlisted for include ‘Video of the Year’, ‘Song of the Summer’, ‘Best Hip-Hop Song’, and the ‘Most Iconic VMA Performance’ for his 2000 rendition of ‘The Real Slim Shady’.
This year is a big year for the Detroit musician. Even if he doesn’t win all eight awards, just one victory will make him the most decorated male artist in the history of the VMAs.
At the moment, the Encore creator is tied with Genesis lead singer and rock singer Phil Collins with the most gongs. Additionally, with a total of 67 nominations over the course of his 25-year career, he is only behind Madonna as the most-nominated artist of all time.
The 2024 VMAs are set to be an exciting affair. In addition to Eminem’s opening performance, Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion will host the ceremony and perform some of her latest singles on the night.
This year’s VMAs will air at 8pm ET on September 11th. The MTV show will also host a number of performances, including Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Lenny Kravitz, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello and LL Cool J.
The ceremony was initially scheduled for September 10th. However, MTV was forced to reschedule to avoid conflicts with the upcoming presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
‘California Gurls’ singer Katy Perry will also receive the iconic Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which has previously been awarded to Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and the legendary Missy Elliott.
