Eminem and NWA confirmed as nominees for the Songwriters Hall of Fame
The nominees for the 2025 Songwriters Hall of Fame have been revealed, and some prominent hip-hop acts have been featured on the list. Most notably, 8 Mile legend Eminem and the pioneers of gangsta rap NWA. Other prominent musicians on the list include the likes of Janet Jackson, George Clinton, and Boy George.
On November 12th, the Songwriters Hall of Fame announced its official list of nominees for 2025. The list was split into categories for performing and non-performing songwriters, with the performing group having more name recognition.
That said, only three individuals from each category will be officially inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The nominations list is long and boasts 26 nominees. That said, this year’s hip-hop acts are limited to a total of two.
Aside from Eminem and NWA, both categories have some pretty interesting and deserving figures such as Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette and Bryan Adams, who fall into the performing acts as well as Mike Chapman, Sonny Curtis, Franne Golde, Rodney Jerkins, Roger Nichols who made the list as non-performing nominees
The Songwriters Hall of Fame chairman is the iconic Chic frontman, Nile Rodgers. Other music industry figures that sit on the board include the likes of Linda Moran (the first female executive at Warner Music Group) and Donna Caseine as well as musicians such as Ne-Yo, Desmond Child and Stephen Dorff.
The entire Board of Directors and the Hall of Fame’s President’s Advisory Council have until December 22nd to cast their vote, which will decide the six individuals who they believe should be honoured with a place in the Hall of Fame. The six inductees will be honoured in June next year at an Induction and Awards Gala in New York City.
In 2023, the Electric Light Orchestra’s Jeff Lynne, alongside Gloria Estefan, Teddy Riley, Glen Ballard, Liz Rose and Tim Rice, were all officially announced as winners and inducted into the Hall of Fame. Earlier this year, REM, Timbaland, Steely Dan, Hillary Lindsey and Dean Pitchford were inducted, with Cindy Walker and Prince receiving posthumous inductions.
R&B sensation SZA also became the second black woman of all time to receive an award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and earned herself the Hal David Starlight Award. The last vocalist to have such an honour bestowed upon them was Alicia Keys in 2005.
Until next year, fans won’t know who the official winners are. However, many hope eligible voters don’t overlook NWA’s mammoth contributions to hip-hop culture.
