Drum ‘n’ bass legend MC Skibadee has died aged 54

Legendary drum ‘n’ bass pioneer MC Skibadee has passed away aged 54. His cause of death is unknown.

His death was announced on Facebook in a post that read: “Hello everyone, as Alphonsos first born i unfortunately come some with sad news to say that skibadee has passed away, as a family we ask for some privacy but may he rest in peace.”

Born as Alfonso Bondzie in London, Skibadee started to make a name for himself in 1993 when he started appearing on City Sound Radio. Two years later, he became the resident DJ for pirate station Kool FM, and
also played regular jungle events across the city.

His big break came when he and MC Det launched 2Xfreestyle. Together, they innovated a new drum ‘n’ bass style that incorporated hip-hop into the genre.

Skibadee had several hits, including most prominently ‘Inside Me’. He also picked up awards including the acclaimed Best MC gong by 1xtra in 2006 and the Stevie Hyper D Memorial Award For Lifetime Achievement at the 2010 Drum & Bass Awards.

Tributes have poured in from across the scene with Friction writing on Twitter: “RIP Skibadee. Can’t believe Im writing this right now. Had some amazing times with him on stage over the years. An absolute legend of our scene and will be remembered forever.”

Meanwhile, DJ Fresh wrote: “I cannot believe I’m writing this. RIP @TheRealSkibz MC Skibadee. His contribution to Drum and Bass can never be equaled. He was first and foremost a great guy I always really enjoyed spending time with. Goodbye old friend, we will keep your memory alive forever.”
