Album of the Week: Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s ‘Some Sexy Songs 4 U’
The world may be zoning in on Drake as Kendrick Lamar’s opponent in their fiery beef, but the 6 God has other plans. Instead of making diss tracks his responsibility, Drizzy is giving his loyal fans what they want with his new album Some Sexy Songs 4 U, a collaborative project with his longtime collaborator, PARTYNEXTDOOR.
Released on February 14th as a Valentine’s Day soundtrack, the album finds the two Toronto artists combining over 21 tracks. Songs on the project include ‘CN Tower’, ‘Crying in Chanel’, ‘Spider-Man Superman’, ‘Small Town Fame’, ‘Raining in Houston’ and ‘Celibacy’. The record boasts a total runtime of 73 minutes.
Another song is titled ‘Brian Steele’, which is named after the lawyer who represented Young Thug in his YSL RICO case. On the track, Drake responds to Thug’s plea for him to settle his issues with Future and Metro Boomin. “Broski just hit me, said, ‘Put all the beef on the side,’ I can’t/ Mm-hmm, I’m heated now, yeah / N*ggas want meet up, talk about shit, I’m vegan now/ Evil eyes were staring at me and I see it now,” he raps.
Still, Drake doesn’t altogether swerve from addressing his Kendrick feud. On the track ‘Gimme a Hug’, which samples Aaron Hall’s 1993 hit single ‘I Miss You’, he touches on their rap battle without mentioning him by name.
He spits, “Bulletproof doors so heavy, got me rolling ’round like a dignitary/ Funny how it’s only bitch n*ggas that are waiting on The Boy’s obituary/ ‘Cause if I die, it’s these n*ggas that become the sole beneficiary/ And what the fuck are they gon’ do with it?/ Have the girls up at 29 on stage twerking with a dictionary?”
On the same song, Drake also takes shots at another rival, Joe Budden, referencing the former video vixen who co-hosts The Joe Budden Podcast. “Melyssa Ford, you a legend from the 6, hate to see you with a dick-sucker,” he raps.
Some Sexy Songs 4 U is Drake’s first album since 2023’s For All the Dogs, while PARTYNEXDOOR only released PARTYNEXTDOOR 4 last year. Party signed with Drake’s OVO Sound label in 2013 and has released four solo LPs on the label, as well as various EPs.
Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR connecting for a full-length album comes off the back of fan-favourite songs on their individual projects over the years, including ‘Loyal’, ‘Come and See Me’, ‘Recognize’, ‘With You’, ‘Members Only’, ‘Preach’, ‘Over Here’, ‘Since Way Back’ and ‘Wednesday Night Interlude’. It was only a matter time before they dropped a joint project, given the fact Drizzy has called him his “favourite artist in the world.”
Features are kept to a minimum across the album, recruiting Yebba on ‘Die Trying’, Chino Pacas on ‘Meet Your Padre’ and Pim on ‘Pimmie’s Dilemma’. Drake has stated that the project includes a mixture of “turned up” songs and “personal feelings,” while Party described Some Sexy Songs 4 U as a “classic” album last year. Only time can be the judge of that.
