DMX gets his own street in Yonkers, New York
DMX now has a street named after him in Yonkers.
The hip-hop world was left in shock in April 2021 after the 50-year-old rapper died as a result of a heart attack.
According to Pitchfork, the city of Yonkers has renamed the corner of School Street and Brooke Street in Yonkers as “Earl DMX Simmons Way.”
Earl DMX Simmons Way is located near the Calcagno Homes, the public housing where DMX grew up. Nearby, there’s also a large mural, painted by Floyd Simmons, that honours the rapper.
On May 27th, the Yonkers City Council voted without objection to move forward with the proposal, following a public hearing that received support from the local community.
DMX already has his own day in New York. The month he died, the state of New York announced his birthday, December 18th, as “Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons Day.”
Community activist Priscilla Echi said, “His lyrics were rapped on the senate floor by senator Jamal Bailey who introduced a resolution in his honour.”
Bailey added, “In New York, we have our own hip-hop royalty. He’s the Earl of Westchester County. He is DMX, he is one of the greatest hip hop artists we will ever know.”
News about the street name arrives shortly after a posthumous DMX book titled The Gospel According to DMX was announced. It’s set to be released on November 17th, 2026, and will provide an intimate look into his spiritual life and creative mind.
The book is described as “a collection of Earl Simmons’ spiritual writings, prayers, sermons, and select lyrics. Presented as a beautifully designed keepsake edition, the book features never-before-seen handwritten pages that offer an intimate window into the private devotions of a man whose faith was as fierce as his artistry.”
