DJ Mustard and Boi-1da enter Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud
The Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud is far from over. In fact, it is only getting bigger and more fiery as the producers behind the diss tracks are now jumping in to defend their collaborators. Drake recently filed a lawsuit against his own record label, Universal Music Group, and many are still reeling from his decision to do so.
However, the beatmakers responsible for the music that fueled the beef are now entering the firing line. In November, during Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival at the LA Dodger’s Dodger Stadium, DJ Mustard decided to troll Drake in front of 56,000 hip-hop fans.
While playing a set of classic hits, including Tyga’s ‘Rack City’, Mustard began to play the 2011 Drake track ‘Crew Love’ featuring The Weeknd. However, seconds before Drizzy’s verse began, he switched the track to Future and Metro Boomin’s ‘Like That’ featuring Kendrick Lamar.
After doing so, the crowd went wild, and considering the location of the festival, it is unsurprising. Still, DJ Mustard, who produced the iconic diss track ‘They Not Like Us,’ ruffled some feathers by choosing to do this, most notably Boi-1da.
Boi-1da has been an in-house producer for Drake’s OVO Sound since its inception, and the Toronto native has been a longtime collaborator and friend of Drake. As such, it is no surprise that the beatmaker is not happy with the way Drizzy is being treated in hip-hop at the moment.
On November 9th, Mustard exposed a DM he got from Boi-1da that saw he send the message, “West Coast Rap is ass.” However, DJ Mustard insisted that if you hear West Coast rap in LA and see how it moves people, maybe the Canadian would feel different. Instead, Boi-1da doubled down, writing, “Ass. Nobody outside LA wanna hear that shit.”
Nevertheless, Mustard, who keeps a close eye on his direct messages, hit Boi-1da with a message of his own, which the Toronto beatmaker sent to him after ‘Not Like Us’ reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Exposing Boi-1da’s message, DJ Mustard posted a screenshot that saw the OVO producer write, “Good shit. Beat hard AF.”
Boi-1da was one of Drake’s producers for ‘Family Matters’, one of his Kendrick dis tracks back in May. However, many find it strange that he has suddenly decided to diss the West Coast, considering he produced many of the tracks on Kendrick’s 2021 album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.
