Chris Brown sues Warner for $500 million over defamatory allegations

Chris Brown has issued a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. In the suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on January 21st, the singer accused the company of making defamatory claims against him in the documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence.

The documentary was released by Warner Bros Discovery in October 2024 and went into detail about Brown’s legal history. Among the topics was a claim from a woman who sued Brown for allegedly drugging and assaulting her during a yacht party hosted by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in 2020.

According to Rolling Stone, Brown has accused them and Ample Entertainment of “promoting and publishing false information in their pursuit of likes, clicks, downloads and dollars and to the detriment” of himself, despite “knowing that it was full of lies and deception and violating basic journalistic principles.”

His lawyers note that he has never been found guilty of any sexual crime, despite what the documentary may suggest.

The lawsuit continued, “To put it simply, this case is about the media putting their own profits over the truth. They did so after being provided proof that their information was false, and their storytelling ‘Jane Doe’ had not only been discredited over and over but was in fact a perpetrator of intimate partners violence and aggressor herself.

“Mr Brown has never been found guilty of any sex related crime… but this documentary states in every available fashion that he is a serial rapist and sexual abuser.”

The woman has also been named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Brown’s attorneys have accused Warner Bros of “framing her as a reliable source to bolster their sensationalised portrayal instead of the physical aggressor in a romantic relationship” after her claims “were determined to be entirely fabricated.”

Brown’s lawyer, Levi McCathern, said in a statement, “This case is about protecting the truth. Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists. Their action undermine not only Mr Brown’s decade-long effort to rebuild his life but also the credibility of true survivors of violence.”
