The British actor Childish Gambino called a ‘good-looking dude’: “I’d totally do him”
Childish Gambino married his longtime partner, Michelle White, in January. Despite being in a heterosexual relationship, the rapper/actor, also known by his birth name, Donald Glover, has never been one to put a label on his sexuality.
The 41-year-old, now a father of three, once revealed he had a crush on Daniel Craig, describing him as the best-dressed British man. “Daniel Craig. Man, that’s a good-looking dude,” he said. “Every time I see him I think, ‘I’d totally do him.'”
Speaking to GQ, he continued, “He exudes a confidence that I want. He’s got these weird zombie eyes that are piercing – you don’t want to look into them, but you can’t help yourself. He’s always dressed super-well but doesn’t look like he’s trying. I like the polos on his broad shoulders.”
Gambino admitted that he’s struggled with his sexuality and refused to put a label on it. “Most of my college years were me being like, ‘I don’t know what I like,’” he told Michaela Cole. “I had friends who asked, ‘Are you gay?’ And I’d be like, ‘I sort of feel like I am because I love this community.’ You know? But maybe I’m not? And I always was trying to figure out, ‘Am I weird for not wanting to label it?”
“Yet, also, I never felt completely safe in just one place. One time, I was really close with this guy – a white guy. I was like, ‘Oh, man, this guy’s my friend.’ And then, one day, we went to the mall, and some Black kids ragged on his shorts. He turned to me and said, ‘There are Black people, and then there are n*ggas.’”
Following the incident, Gambino chatted with his father, who gave him some support. “My brain, my heart… It was really intense, so I go home, and I tell my dad,” he said. “To his credit, he sat there for a minute and just thought about it, and then he said, ‘What do you feel? That’s the most valuable thing right now.’”
He continued, “I think I said, ‘I think I understand what he meant. And that really hurts me.’ But I was in high school, so I didn’t really have the emotional tools to really be like, ‘Oh, I understand,’ because I had no experience. We just never talked again.”
Craig himself has played gay characters in the Knives Out franchise and most recently, Luca Guadagnino’s Queer. The 57-year-old, best-known for playing James Bond, told The Sunday Times, “You are supposed to reflect life. And that [gay] relationship [in Knives Out] reflects my life. It’s normal. But we don’t want to make a song and dance out of it. It just feels right.” Craig married a woman, actress Rachel Weisz, in 2011.
The actor claimed he couldn’t have played a gay character while he was occupying the role of 007. “I couldn’t have done this while doing Bond. It would look reactionary, like I was showing my range,” he said. “It’s just not a conversation I wanted. I had it all the way through Bond anyway. Could there be this Bond? That Bond? So, anything that is going to inflame that conversation? No – life’s too short.”
