Charlamagne Tha God says Jack Harlow’s new album made him “whiter”
Charlamagne Tha God believes Jack Harlow got “whiter” with his new album.
Harlow released his new R&B project, Monica, on March 13th, and made headlines with comments he made about the body of work.
The Louisville rapper appeared on an episode of Popcast and proclaimed that he “got Blacker” with his new music.
Since the interview was posted online, many people have been sharing their reactions to his racial comments. Speaking on The Breakfast Club on March 16th, Charlamagne claimed that Harlow’s words are the exact reason why he got “whiter.”
“Let me tell you something,” he began. “I like Jack Harlow. I’ve met Jack Harlow. We’ve interviewed Jack Harlow. Jack is a nice guy. But I told y’all on Friday that this album made him whiter. And saying the music made you Blacker is exactly why I said this album made him whiter. You got to be really white to say that this music made you Blacker.”
Although Charlamagne thought Harlow’s comments were “sarcasm,” he said, “Sometimes you swing, and you miss with sarcasm. I do it all the time.” He also said that Monica was “not that dope” and “people would accept it” if it were actually a good project.
Harlow’s initial words came after Joe Coscarelli stated that Harlow “didn’t retreat into a whiter genre” with his latest material.
The rapper went on to say, “I love Black music. I love the sound of Black music. Of course, I’m hyper-aware of the politics of today, that safer landing spot that a lot of my white contemporaries have found.”
He added, “Of course, it appealed to me to do something that I felt like, at a time when there’s plenty of people expecting me to take some of the routes that y’all be taking, to take the route that not only might not be expected, but is also the one I genuinely want to take.”
