Charlamagne Tha God calls Kendrick Lamar hip-hop’s greatest: “It’s not even close”
Charlamagne Tha God has commented recently that Kendrick Lamar’s star-studded show, ‘The Pop Out’, cemented the rapper as the very best, saying that it was Kendrick staking his unchallenged claim to the rap game’s “throne”.
Generally speaking, when people begin discussing who the best rapper of all time is, the topic of live shows doesn’t enter the conversation, as rap fans focus more on lyricism and the quality of songs. However, Kendrick Lamar’s recent show, ‘The Pop Out’, hosted in Inglewood, Los Angeles, is being categorised as one of the biggest hip hop events of all time. The show was a unifying experience as critics and fans alike rejoiced in the communicative spectacle. One of the show’s biggest fans was Charlamagne Tha God.
He has spoken out about the gig, saying that he believes Kendrick Lamar has well and truly claimed the crown of rap’s greatest. Not only did he put this down to the talent on display, but also because of Lamar’s overall artistic impact. This is represented in the star-studded lineup that made up the event and the stature of many people in attendance.
“Kendrick set the tone,” he said while virtually hosting The Breakfast Club, “He let us know that this was a victory lap, and he came there to blood and crip-walk on his enemy’s head-top. And to me, the show wasn’t about Drake as much. It was about Kendrick Lamar becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion of hip-hop.”
He continued, “Like, when it comes to this new generation we’ve been watching over the last 15 years, Kendrick is the king of hip-hop, and it’s not even close. And I’m not talking about charts; I’m not talking about streaming records, I’m not talking about, you know, pop songs, singing on songs. I’m talking about bars, rap, hip-hop, culture. Kendrick wears that crown, and it’s not even close.”
A lot of hip-hop fans agree, seeing ‘The Pop Out’ as a cultural moment, something that marks the end of one of the biggest rap beefs in history and truly cements Kendrick Lamar as the best rapper on the planet. There is also a great deal of speculation surrounding how rappers involved on the written side of the beef must be feeling during this period. For instance, Drake has yet to comment on the show, and it’s unlikely he will.
