The 2013 domestic violence case that gave 50 Cent three years’ probation in Los Angeles

50 Cent is a world-famous rap star with legions of adoring fans, but he has been accused of some terrible things in his time that make for uncomfortable reading.

In 2013, 50 was facing some very serious allegations of kicking Daphne Joy, the mother of one of his children, and destroying her property. He and Joy had reportedly been in a relationship for about three years by this point.

These alleged actions were said to have taken place during the course of an argument at her house in Los Angeles in June that year. 50 was accused by Joy of destroying her stuff before she took refuge in her bedroom, claiming the rapper then kicked the door open and attacked her.

50’s alleged actions led to damages amounting to $7,100, and he apparently fled the scene before the police showed up, whereupon they discovered several broken objects around the house, including chandeliers, furniture and a TV.

The charges later levelled against 50 were one count of domestic violence, plus four counts of vandalism. If found guilty in a Los Angeles County court, he was staring down the barrel of a five-year prison sentence and a $46,000 fine.

50 pleaded not guilty to three of the vandalism charges and the domestic violence charge, but he did, however, plead no contest to one of the vandalism charges.

The domestic violence charge was dropped in the end, as were three of the vandalism charges, and for the no contest, he was handed three years’ probation, plus 30 days of community service.

This episode would not prove to be the last bout of tension playing out publicly between 50 and Joy. She was characterised as a “sex worker” in a lawsuit against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, which she denied, but it led 50 to file for sole custody of their shared son in March 2024.

Joy then accused 50 of sexual and physical assault, which led him to sue her for defamation, a lawsuit which was dropped that September.
