Cardi B reveals why she turned down Super Bowl halftime show
Cardi B has explained why she declined the opportunity to headline a Super Bowl halftime show.
The Bronx rapper is one of the biggest artists worldwide, but she feels there’s still more room for her to grow, hence the rejection.
During a recent interview, Cardi was asked if performing at the Super Bowl was part of her career goals. She responded by explaining that she wants to gather more hits before she headlines the iconic stage.
“Of course. I got asked to do the Super Bowl and I denied it,” she told Billboard. “I feel like soon, if I get to do it, I’m going to have more hits. I’m going to be more experienced, and I’m going to eat that up.”
Cardi only has one album, Invasion of Privacy, released in 2018, but already has four number one singles: ‘Bodak Yellow’, ‘I Like It’, ‘WAP’, and ‘Up’.
She’ll be hoping that number increases this month with the release of her long-awaited new album, Am I the Drama?, set to arrive on September 19th.
Cardi previously claimed she rejected the Super Bowl to show solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL player who protested against police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem.
She admitted she had “mixed feelings” but had no choice but to “stand behind” someone being a voice for minorities.
“My husband, he loves football. His kids play football. It’s really hard for him,” she said to The Associated Press. “He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can’t go to the Super Bowl, because he’s got to stand for something.”
Cardi added, “You have to sacrifice that. I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”
