Bobby Shmurda’s father released from prison after 30-year Miami sentence
The father of Bobby Shmurda has been released from prison after 30 years.
The Brooklyn rapper took to social media last week to celebrate his dad, Gervase Johnson, being a free man.
Shmurda, who is 31 years old, was only two months old when his father was locked up. He posted various videos on his Instagram Stories to capture the moment.
In one clip, he wrote, “Nah, why my pops out,” while sitting in the back of a car. In another video, a shirtless Shmurda is seen all smiles while his dad holds a tablet.
According to Hot 97, his father was convicted in Miami, Florida, in the mid-1990s on attempted first-degree murder charges.
Shmurda spoke about his father on his hit single ‘Hot N*gga’ in 2014, rapping, “Mama said no pussycats inside my doghouse/ That’s what got my daddy locked up in the dog pound.”
The NYC rapper served his own prison time in the 2010s after pleading guilty to third-degree conspiracy and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He was sentenced to seven years at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, before his release in 2021.
Speaking on his experience behind bars, Shmurda told GQ, “I used to sleep next to people who had 40 to life. People who’ve been in there for 30 years and haven’t laughed – I’d have them crying all day. When you got good energy, no matter where you at, you can bring a smile to someone’s face.”
He continued, “Wanna shower five times a week instead of three? Get a job. Eat better? Get a job. More phone time? Get a job. But they kept firing my ass when they realised I was just doing it to stay on the phone.”
