A$AP Rocky releases new single ‘Punk Rocky’ from ‘Don’t Be Dumb’ album
A$AP Rocky has released ‘Punk Rocky’, the first single from his upcoming Don’t Be Dumb album.
‘Punk Rocky’ is produced by Rocky, Ging, Zach Fogarty, and Cristoforo Donadi, and comes with a music video directed by Rocky.
Actress Winona Ryder stars in the visual alongside Thundercat and Danny Elfman, longtime Tim Burton collaborator and former member of Oingo Boingo.
In the song, Rocky sings, “I thought I fell in love, I thought she felt it too/ I thought we was in love, she just another fluke/ I thought you was the one, I guess you just the two/ You want the last laugh, look, now the joke’s on you.”
Although Rocky directed the video, there’s a clear influence from Tim Burton, who worked with Ryder in the movies Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Frankenweenie.
Burton designed six album covers for Don’t Be Dumb, depicting six different personas for the rapper. Rocky told Billboard, “I sat and I played the album for Tim Burton, and he was fucking with it heavy, he was rocking his head and he’s like, ‘Wow! I didn’t know you made that kind of music!’”
Elfman, who scored films like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, has also contributed music to Rocky’s album.
Speaking on their collaborations, Elfman said, “Working with @asaprocky was a great experience. Just hanging out and listening to his new tracks… He’s an amazingly creative artist and I was really impressed with how diverse his influences and inspirations were. He’s truly a one-of-a-kind.”
Don’t Be Dumb is scheduled for release on January 16th and will serve as his first album since 2018’s Testing. It will include 16 tracks.
