A$AP Rocky recently spent time around Denzel Washington while filming Spike Lee’s upcoming movie, Highest 2 Lowest. The Harlem rapper got to know the legendary actor and discovered some hip-hop music he listens to daily.
During a recent interview, Rocky revealed a surprising list of rappers that Washington is a fan of. While people might think he’s into veterans of the genre, he actually plays many current artists from Memphis.
“That guy is a hip-hop encyclopaedia,” he told Apple Music. “Of course he knows Miles Davis and he knows the jazz and stuff, but what he listens to is that stuff.”
When asked if he listens to Three 6 Mafia, Rocky replied, “No, no, like, Moneybagg Yo. Who would think? He listens to NLE Choppa. For real. He quoted NLE Choppa. He listens to Pooh Shiesty.
“People think I’m lying – people think I’m saying this shit to sound cool and make headlines. I’m dead fucking serious, this is what the dude do. I ain’t one of them type of guys.”
He added, “That’s what he’s on. And I find it fascinating and relatable that this man, who is 70 years old, is like, he’s not curious, he’s of the culture.”
Out on August 22nd, A24 film Highest 2 Lowest stars Rocky and Washington alongside Ice Spice, Jeffrey Wright and Ilfenesh Hadera. After witnessing his talent first-hand, Rocky was full of praise for Washington, calling him one of the best actors ever.
“It was an honour, man,” he said. “It’s Denzel, he’s one of the greatest actors of all time. Just take race out of it, take gender out of it, he’s just one of the greatest.”
