Swizz Beatz and Timbaland sold their Verzuz webcast series to the video-sharing social network Triller back in 2021. However, they have since filed to sue the app for $28 million.
The classic hip hop duo claim that Triller has been negligent with due payments in 2022 and when they have made requests to the company, it has refused to respond, leaving them no other course of action available other than to pursue the matter legally.
Swizz Beatz and Timbaland have claimed that they received payments in January and April 2021, however, Triller has since defaulted on payments that were due in 2022. A new payment plan was then agreed upon, but these have also been defaulted on.
This isn’t the first time the streaming service has landed in hot water. Back in 2021, Universal Music Group pulled its back catalogue from the app over a royalty payment dispute.
The issue with Swizz Beatz and Timbaland is exacerbated further still because of the fact that all contributing artists to Verzuz are owed equity for its sale to Triller. This means that D’Angelo, DMX, Alicia Keys, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, Jeezy, RZA, Nelly, Brandy, Monica, Gladys Knight, T-Pain, Lil Jon, Erykah Badu and more, have also been short-changed.
As of yet, Triller are yet to comment on the matter. However, further details are expected the emerge in the coming weeks.
