50 Cent reveals the one reason he doesn’t rap anymore
50 Cent has revealed why he doesn’t rap anymore. The Get Rich or Die Tryin star has claimed that a decline in the intelligence of hip-hop is why he decided to put down the mic for over a decade.
In a recent interview, the rapper spoke about how he believes the standard of hip-hop is less than what it was when he initially started rapping. He confirmed that if he were to continue making music, he feels as though he would need to dumb down his lyrics.
“If you listen to the music that’s out right now, I have to tap into my stupid,” he said while speaking on Earn Your Leisure, “I have to tap into the stupid side of me to write the right thing when it comes time to write the music.”
The G-Unit boss continued, “This why I haven’t created as much content as I was creating in the past and I started going towards the film production and development of these projects. Because I can impact things in a bigger way through that.”
Despite feeling that he is too intelligent for many modern rap fans, 50 Cent has confirmed that he has been teasing a musical comeback over the past year. Whether or not we will get an official 50 Cent comeback album remains to be seen; however, given the success of his most recent tour, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise.
It’s not the first time that 50 Cent has weighed in on what his opinion on modern hip-hop is. In an interview that took place in 2022, he was also harsh on the current state of the genre. “Part of hip-hop is youth culture. I don’t think you’re supposed to have the hottest verse at 50 years old in hip-hop,” he said, “I think the 16-year-old-kid, the 15-year-old – that guy should be thinking and doing what is keeping the culture thriving, so it grows to a new energy with new vibes, with new music.”
Curtis Jackson continued, “I mean, some of it you look at and it’s easier! The cadences are the same, they’re rapping the same way on the records. If I gotta go make a record right now, I could do that record easy!”
Jackson said that if a rapper knows the words to their artist’s favourite song, it’s easier for them to re-record different lyrics and recreate their own version of the track. He critiqued a lot of trap music for using the same melody, which shows why it’s easier for artists to do well these days, as there is more mimicry.
