The time 2 Chainz got sued for calling a woman a “thot”

2 Chainz has faced his share of issues with the law throughout his life, but a stray remark almost caused him the biggest legal headache of all.

Like so many of his rap contemporaries, 2 Chainz has been in trouble with the law for drug offences, with his first conviction for felony cocaine possession occurring when he was just 15, while several other incidents involving the possession of drugs have also followed in his adult years.

But in 2015, 2 Chainz faced another sort of legal issue altogether, but it was no less serious for him. He was being sued for $5million, after allegedly referring to a woman as a “thot”.

An acronym meaning ‘that hoe over there’, ‘thot’ is a derogatory term that comes loaded with misogyny, and 2 Chainz was accused of using it in a video while referring to a specific woman, who then sought damages.

When she filed the suit, the woman claimed that she had been fired from her job as a result of the video in which 2 Chainz called her a thot. Her boss, apparently, had feared the “negative publicity” that the clip threatened to bring to their business.

As well as a lost job, the woman also claimed that her reputation had been damaged by 2 Chainz’s alleged remark, and she was therefore seeking a figure of $5million as compensation.

The case, in the end, was dismissed by a judge in North Carolina, with the rationale that the supposed use of the term thot in this instance did not constitute “extreme or outrageous conduct”. Therefore, 2 Chainz wouldn’t have to pay the enormous sum.

The rapper later referenced the case in a video he posted to Instagram, in which he was showing off his newborn son. He could be heard saying in the clip, “We won that case today. We threw that case out”, relieved to be able to move on from it.

2 Chainz’s rap career has chugged along at a steady rate since that period in the mid-2010s. His albums have tended to find moderate commercial success upon release, which, given that there isn’t a $5million hole in his bank account, is probably just fine.
