Young Thug trial witness arrested for failing to testify in RICO trial
The ongoing YSL RICO trial of rapper Young Thug took a somewhat unexpected turn when Lil Woody, a known associate of the rapper who had previously received an immunity deal to testify against Young Thug, was arrested.
Thugger’s former associate was held in contempt yesterday after failing to provide evidence against the rapper during the trial. When on the stand, Woody invoked his Fifth Amendment right and refused to testify against Young Thug.
Lil Woody, real name Kevin Copeland, was arrested for failing to comply with his previously agreed immunity deal following a felony arrest in 2021. A portion of his testimony from that time had already been leaked to the media, but when asked to testify in court, Copeland refused to cooperate with the prosecution.
When asked by Fulton County Superior Court Chief Judge Ural Glanville to give his age, Copeland replied, “I’m grown. I’m an adult,” before stating, “I take the fifth”.
After a few attempts, Glanville continued: “I just want to make sure that you understand, if you don’t testify, then I as the judge in this case have several remedies. One of those is that I can hold you in contempt and jail you because the way that you get out of that contempt is to just testify.”
With the news, Young Thug’s attorney attempted to move for a mistrial, stating it was already known that Copeland would plead the fifth after social media posts were shared of Copeland’s plan.
“I’m good stop calling me I ain’t crying at all fuck em,” Copeland wrote in an Instagram story post. “This my last jail time I love y’all and I have to take this trip my head high nobody didn’t force me to and imma be okay God didn’t bring me this far for nothing it is what it is I’ll be okay.”
Glanville struck down the motion and will hold Copeland in contempt until Monday, June 10th, whereby the next course of action will be taken.
