Why Too $hort and E-40 couldn’t collaborate with Drake

E-40 and Too $hort are legends in the Bay Area and have been heavy hitters since the 1990s. That said, they know about how to make hits. However, when the opportunity to work with Drake came along, Too $hort just couldn’t get a song over the line.

During an interview, the two Bay artists highlighted their love for Drake, and E-40 spoke about how, because they’re from different generations, it’s harder for them to secure collaborations with people like Drizzy.

Speaking about how he really wanted to do a song with the ‘God’s Plan’ star, Too $hort revealed, “I was really focused on being on that Drake vibe, and I was just about to do a song with Drake. I feel like it might have happened, and then he got the 13 Billboard Awards, and nobody answered the phone anymore. I was like, ‘Fuck.’ I ain’t call too many times. I just fell back, like, damn. I missed the window.” However, E-40 asserted that if Drizzy had been around in the 2000s when Too $hort released his most renowned track, ‘Blow The Whistle,’ the Oakland lyricist would have been able to land a track with Drake.

Stating this, E-40 explained, “You know what it is? $hort, let me tell you something. If Drake was out when ‘Blow the Whistle’ first came out going crazy or ‘Tell Me When to Go,’ he would have been on the records.”

E-40 continued, insisting that if they had a relationship with Drake in the 2000s when they were mainstream MCs, he would have definitely joined forces with them because Drake only jumps on successful tracks, stating, “We had a relationship with him. We was cool. We would have been like, we send this over, he would have got on it right away because he gets on hot shit. He get on n*gga’s shit that’s hot.”

He added, “You know what I’m saying? We catch one, I’m sure he’d get on that. Drake, roll with me. I fuck with Drake.” Drake has actually shown a lot of love to the Bay Area over the years. He appeared on DJ Khaled’s track ‘For Free’, which sampled Too Short’s 2006 hit ‘Blow the Whistle’.

Furthermore, E-40 made a cameo appearance in the music video for ‘The Motto’ back in 2012. Too $hort insisted that he wants to get in the studio with Drake’s producers, Noah ‘40’ Shebib and Boi-1da, because he believes they make great music. Explaining how he likes the people behind the beats, Too $hort concluded, “It ain’t just that it’s Drake, though. I like the music that comes from him and his producers. They make like some good ass music, man. I’m like, I wouldn’t just mind being part of one of them damn songs at some point.”
